Chapter 21

"...Do you think she did it?"

Kaito denied the Shinigami's question. "She" referred to San, the servant of Alcaiz.

She had been in the servant's room until a little while ago and should have had time to do something.

"Is there a way for magic to activate automatically? No... would a magical device function like that? But I don't see anything that looks like one."

Without checking inside the closet, he couldn't be sure, but as far as Kaito could see, there were no magical devices.

To begin with, it was unlikely that a magician would use magic just to clean for a servant. It was only natural that servants would do it themselves.

That said, the room was neatly arranged and thoroughly cleaned.

That wasn't unusual. It was natural for a magician to have servants accompanying them. Even if it was the servant's room, perhaps they kept it in a clean state, but...

"Was she living in this room... I wonder?"

"Seems so. If she's the only servant managing the mansion..."

There was no sense of anyone actually living in this room.

Rei had said she was using this room. However, it was impossible to tell which parts Rei was actually using.

If she was managing the mansion alone, it wouldn't be strange for flaws to appear somewhere. The place where they would most likely appear would be her own room—the servant's room, wouldn't it?

The fact that it looked completely unused could mean that she was excellent at her job. Or perhaps there was another reason she had to keep it that way.

"Perhaps she normally used a different room. If so, there might be something to this room."

The fact that it wasn't being used made its suspicious nature stand out. The color-coded beds were part of that, too.

In the dining hall as well, things were divided into four colors.

San might report to Alcaiz if she saw the servant's room and the dining hall.

"There's no reason to interrogate her anyway."

It was unclear whether Rei knew about the colors of the beds in the servant's room or the color coding in the dining hall.

The only thing they could ask her was whether she was really using this room. If she said it was clean because she cleaned it, that would be the end of the matter.

Gold Goal, the master of the mansion, had decided to pass on his magic before hiring Rei.

Could this situation have been set up by him? It was possible he didn't want to give Rei any unnecessary information.

"...There doesn't seem to be anything unusual here."

Kaito touched the black bed ahead to his right.

As Rei had said, there was no change to Kaito's body, and there didn't seem to be any traps set.

When he pulled back the bedspread, he found a number drawn on it. The black bed was number one. As it happened, it was the same color as Kaito's tailcoat. It must be a coincidence that the number and color matched Kaito.

After all, Kaito had not been scheduled to come, and Rei didn't know that Kaito was "Ichi."

Next, he opened the closet. There was nothing inside. There wasn't even a gray tailcoat hung up for the mansion magician's servant.

If several tailcoats were prepared for Rei to wear in one of the closets, that would show which one was specifically for Rei.
