Chapter 20

"While we know the mansion's master exists, it's questionable whether they're actually in this mansion. No greetings, and then there's the matter of filling the magical tools with just a week's worth of power. If Rei has only met them a few times, it makes sense that she wouldn't know where they are."

The mansion master's whereabouts. If they were hiding in this mansion, they'd be the prime suspect. Within their own territory, they could kill someone more easily than anyone else here.

Kaito looked at the map at Shinigami's words, but no master's room was marked anywhere. Mary and the others apparently hadn't discovered it.

Or perhaps they couldn't tell which room was the master's.

It was strange that Rei didn't know the master's room despite living in the same mansion for months. It was better to assume there was a hidden room. The basement was suspicious, too.

"For now, let's continue exploring. Rei shouldn't interrupt with meal preparations anymore."

Just before Kaito entered the servants' room, Rei had asked for help with cooking. If he was going to investigate, the servants' room should be first.

"Ah..."

What caught his eye was San, Alcaiz's white servant. He saw her leaving the servants' room.

She noticed Kaito too, their gazes meeting.

San gave him a slight bow before heading elsewhere. At least she didn't ignore him like the red servant.

"She beat us to it. Though it's not particularly strange that she was in the room."

Like Kaito and Kiss's servant, Alcaiz probably ordered her to explore the mansion.

If she had been instructed to rest, she would have remained in the servants' room. The fact that she left meant otherwise.

"If she checked it out, should we consider it safe? Time-wise, she could only have checked one or two places."

Given that San had checked the servants' room and emerged safely, the chances were high that it was safe inside.

However, Kaito chose to investigate the servants' room anyway.

Whether there were stairs to the basement in the servants' room. Would Mary and the others even check the servants' room? After all, that was something the servants themselves could check.

If so, it could be a blind spot for the magicians.

"I see. It could be a blind spot for magicians. Even so, whether servants could find anything... If Mary and the others don't enter, it's meaningless."

"I think we should check suspicious places beforehand. San might not have touched certain things either."

Even if told the servants' room was safe, one couldn't touch obviously suspicious spots.

Causing problems for their master's actions would be unacceptable.

Kaito opened the servants' room.

"Unlike the rooms prepared for Mary and the others, there are things here. However..."

Through Kaito's eyes, Shinigami also observed the servants' room.

While Mary's room had nothing, there were beds and closets prepared. Eight of each.

Before Rei came to this mansion, there must have been eight servants. Moreover, each bed and closet was a different color.

Was it to make it easy to tell whose space was whose? Or was there another meaning?

While that was curious, Kaito sensed something else was off about the room. The shinigami must have sensed it, too.
