Chapter 22

"Just to be sure, let's check the beds' numbers. If we tidy up properly afterward, it might take some time."

When Kaito and the Shinigami first looked at the servant's room, it appeared completely unused. If that was the case, San, Alcaiz's servant who had entered before Kaito, might not have checked inside the beds yet.

“Since she has free access to this room, she probably wouldn't leave anything that shouldn't be seen."

The Shinigami seemed to have decided that the priority was to check the beds, not the closets. It wouldn't hurt for Kaito to remember the numbers drawn on the beds.

"I wonder if the bed colors and numbers are the same as the other servants. You seem curious about it, too."

The bed colors were black, white, red, blue, yellow, green, purple, and brown. These included the colors of the tailcoats worn by Mary's, Diana's, Alcaiz's, and Kiss's servants.

Although there was no gray, the color of Rei's tailcoat, would the bed colors match the servants' numbers? They didn't know the number of Kiss's red servant, but Alcaiz's white servant was Three, and Diana's blue servant was Ten.

"...No, that's not it. There doesn't seem to be any connection to our numbers. We don't even know if these were the numbers of the servants who stayed in this mansion."

After the black bed, Kaito checked the white bed on the opposite side, to the left.

The number drawn on the white bed was ten. Ten was the number of Diana's blue servant, while Alcaiz's white servant was three.

The blue and white numbers weren't simply reversed either. The number on the blue bed was four.

White = 10, Black = 1, Blue = 4, Red = 9, Yellow = 8, Green = 2, Purple = 7, Brown = 5

After Kaito checked all of them, this was the result.

There was no zero, and no numbers three or six either. There was also no device in the room for entering numbers or colors.

It seemed worth considering whether there was some kind of meaning to this.

After checking the numbers on the beds, Kaito examined the closet's contents.

There, he found small, eerie dolls. Moreover, they weren't identical dolls; each had slightly different shapes and forms.

The dolls did not have numbers written on them, so it was unclear if they were related to the numbers on the beds.

If they were magical devices that could substitute death for a master and servant, like Kaito and his servant, that would be helpful, but that didn't seem to be the case. They weren't cursed objects either, as nothing happened when Kaito touched them.

"Seven dolls? If you weren't here, that would be the same number as Mary and the others. Is this a coincidence? Or..."

There were eight beds and closets but only seven dolls. They had been notified that Mary's servant wouldn't be coming, so one could think that only the dolls had been reduced accordingly.

"I suppose taking them would be out of the question. Is this all we can investigate here? It seems we have less than thirty minutes left."

There was a clock in the servant's room, and it was approaching 7:30 PM.

The gathering in the dining hall was at 8:00 PM. They couldn't make Mary late for that. At most, they could only take a quick look around.

"I should remind you, your body is composed of memories. Your illness hasn't disappeared. Be careful not to overexert yourself."
