Chapter 76: No Escape
Although using his psychic power, Gu Hang conveyed his warnings and commands to every Alliance soldier in the vicinity, he wouldn’t leave his fate to uncontrollable elements.
Those soldiers might completely ignore the warnings and orders, either due to their loyalty to Mondok and the Alliance or due to a panic response, and directly open fire on Gu Hang and his entourage.
Therefore, Gu Hang had to be prepared for an attack.
If the surrounding soldiers did take action, the armor of the moving Space Marines and Battle Nuns would become Gu Hang’s best cover, impervious to ordinary firepower.
If heavy artillery shells were indeed to come flying, not to mention whether they could easily hit targets moving at high speeds, even if they could, Gu Hang had the ability to detect them in advance and use his psychic powers to make the shells slightly deviate in mid-air, causing them to miss.
At the same time, they would become a sharp blade, piercing through the entire army, heading straight for the Revival City military command to capture Mondok alive.
He believed that with a high-speed assault, nothing could stop nineteen elite warriors, plus himself as a psychic.
At least, the Revival City military certainly didn’t have that capability.
However, despite Gu Hang preparing for the worst-case scenario, it never materialized.
The surrounding soldiers still did not open fire.
Perhaps Gu Hang’s psychic-enhanced words delivered to their ears indeed had an effect. The soldiers hesitated due to the Governor’s authority and the pressure of becoming Imperial traitors, thus not daring to act.
Or perhaps the sight of the Space Marines annihilating an entire mixed tank-infantry company within seconds was truly terrifying. Admittedly, this was because Mondok’s personal guard, blocking the path, completely misunderstood the Space Marines’ combat methods and chose a very wrong deployment, leading to their total annihilation in one wave. But the ordinary soldiers watching were likely stuck in shock and disbelief, needing some time to process what had happened.
Moreover, even if they did process it, would that make it any less terrifying? Over a hundred corpses and two tank wrecks, all within two seconds by seven men, was simply horrifying.
Not to mention, the Battle Nuns hadn’t even made a move.
Of course, both factors likely played a role. The soldiers were indeed scared, and the Governor’s words gave them a reason to convince themselves not to act.
In any case, the soldiers didn’t fire.
And Gu Hang and his group, in their mad dash, continued inward.
Their speed was even faster than Mondok receiving the news.
The person who could directly contact Mondok had just been blown to pieces; some quick-witted individuals wanted to run back and report, but they had to outrun Space Marines and Battle Nuns.
This led to the situation where, by the time Mondok learned that his personal guard sent to intercept had been annihilated, Gu Hang and his entourage were almost upon him.
Mondok’s face had long turned deathly pale.
His most loyal troops were the personal guard right by his side. He had split this unit into three parts in his previous decisions. Apart from those sent to intercept Governor Gu and those still guarding him closely, the rest were dispatched to mobilize other troops.
Of course, he had considered what would happen if a conflict truly broke out and the Governor chose to act. Should he prepare to fight back?
Initially, he thought he was ready. But when he found out that Gu Hang had passed through the checkpoint without being stopped, he began to doubt this and sent out units to directly command the larger forces.
But it seemed too late.
What to do?
It felt like he had only pondered for a moment, without deciding whether to stay, leave, or fight, when the sound of gunfire and artillery reached his ears.
His most loyal personal guard, facing the charging nineteen, bravely fought back.
However, this resistance was utterly futile.
Mondok’s “command post” was essentially a relatively large and decent-looking house in the outer city that had been requisitioned. The surrounding buildings were partly demolished, with the debris forming makeshift fortifications, guarded by his personal soldiers. Also stationed here were four “Challenger” tanks and a mobile command vehicle.
In the event of an attack, this location could hold out; if necessary, the cleared surroundings would allow him to escape relatively easily in the command vehicle.
His personal guard had suitable positions and had preemptively adopted defensive stances, not clustering together. With cover and foxholes, they wouldn’t be wiped out by a single volley from the bombshell guns. Soldiers were still being picked off and injured by small-scale explosions, but at least they could still fight.
Meanwhile, as his personal guard engaged in combat, many nearby Alliance soldiers were also galvanized into action. Seeing General Mondok there, a significant portion of these soldiers decided not to stand by but to launch attacks.
Despite the Space Marines not being able to wipe out the defensive troops in one go, they were not stopped either. Without needing cover, they charged straight ahead. Bullets were ineffective against their ceramic steel armor; grenades couldn’t reach them; the few rocket launchers fired were inaccurate, and those that did hit were deflected by Gu Hang’s psychic powers.
Even without deflection, there might not have been much of a problem. A direct hit might cause a stagger, a bit of discomfort, and some smoke on the armor, but no serious issues.
Of course, the Battle Nuns might be more affected. The white and green armor of the Sisters of Mercy was beautiful but not as sturdy as the Space Marines’.
Therefore, Gu Hang would pay a bit more attention to the fire directed at the Battle Nuns.
Sister Superior Gretel also noticed this. She gave Gu Hang a slight nod of acknowledgment and then threw herself into the battle with even greater vigor.
Leading the charge, she accelerated, breaking through the line and rapidly closing in on a tank that was trying to rotate its cannon to fire. In her hand, she wielded a long-handled halberd, and with a single swing, the golden blade sliced off the tank’s cannon.
Then, she leaped high, plunging the halberd through the top of the tank.
The soldiers inside only saw a golden light shining down on them from above, and the next moment, they saw their commander and driver skewered like candied fruit.
They were petrified with fear.
But this was just a snapshot of the battlefield.
The firepower of ordinary soldiers was utterly incapable of halting the advance of the superhuman warriors. Meanwhile, the bombshell guns wielded by the Space Marines and Battle Nuns easily eliminated any enemies obstructing their path.
They didn’t need to kill every soldier quickly, nor was there a need. In just moments, they had already pierced through the soldiers’ defensive line.
Gu Hang could even see Mondok now.
The Revival City General was right in front of him, hastily boarding a command vehicle, seemingly attempting to flee.
But thinking of running now—how could he possibly escape?
