Chapter 9

Tuesday wasn’t any special day. If anything, it was just three days away from the holiday.

Su Yun woke up early again today, leaving the dorm a full forty minutes ahead of her roommates. By the time she walked out, none of them had even stirred.

At 7 a.m., Su Yun was walking alone under her umbrella. The cafeteria was still mostly empty and very quiet. There was no need to line up—she quickly bought two steaming hot meat buns and held them in her hands.

Even though she knew eating wouldn’t help, the warmth made her feel like it should be fine.

The meat buns at their school were pretty big. As Su Yun held them, some rather improper thoughts suddenly popped into her mind.

She’d never had thoughts like that before.

But today…

Su Yun started wondering why.

Yesterday, when she woke up in that soft, fluffy bed, Qin Xue had been standing right in front of her, wearing only a thin sleep dress, completely different from the usual thick clothes she wore outside.

Even though Su Yun had long since given up on dreams and had no interest in chasing anything anymore, a sight like that still engraved itself deep into her memory.

Just like the meat bun in her hand now.

“…”

She felt like something was wrong with her.

Then Su Yun sat down at a table and, almost like venting, devoured the two meat buns in big bites, trying to shut out the messy thoughts in her head.

……

There were only morning classes on Tuesday, two computer-related courses.

The first class was C language. Half an hour into the lesson, the teacher suddenly asked them to write some code. He would be checking later.

Su Yun sat in the second-to-last row by the window.

She’d picked that seat just to slack off in class, so naturally she hadn’t been paying attention. As usual, she glanced at the code of her classmate next to her and started copying it to get by.

“Su Yun, you don’t get it?” Liu Fei noticed her gaze and turned to look at her.

“Nope. I wasn’t listening.” Su Yun’s tone was surprisingly calm.

She clearly didn’t understand anything, but she wasn’t nervous like the others.

“What we learned today is really simple.”

“Let me explain…” Liu Fei was surprisingly nice about it. He put down his own keyboard, not caring about the nearly finished code he’d been working on.

He pointed at Su Yun’s computer screen, explaining each line of code and what the assignment required.

Some parts Su Yun hadn’t even had time to copy—Liu Fei just grabbed her keyboard and typed them out for her himself.

“Thanks.” Su Yun looked a little stunned at the screen now filled with code.

When had her roommate become so kind?

“No need, it’s super easy anyway.” Liu Fei’s mood lifted inexplicably after hearing her thanks.

Yesterday, Su Yun had taken forever in the bathroom and nearly left him without hot water—by all logic, he should be even more annoyed at her. Their relationship should’ve gotten worse.

But for some reason, ever since Liu Fei had the illusion that Su Yun had gotten thinner, he couldn’t help but keep an eye on her in the dorm, sneaking glances often.

Just like now. Seeing that she didn’t understand, he’d just instinctively wanted to help.

As Liu Fei thought about this, a shiver ran down his spine, and a weird line popped into his head:

“Let me show you something nice.”

“Brother Jie, nooo!”

His face turned bitter.

Was he turning into… a little boy lover?

Su Yun, of course, didn’t know about the inner turmoil Liu Fei was battling. She was just really thankful that he’d helped her get through the check.

When class ended, Su Yun slung her already-packed bag over her shoulder and rushed off to get a good seat in the next classroom.

“Mm…” As she exited the classroom, by coincidence, she bumped shoulders with someone trying to come in.

It was a tall man, probably about 1.8 meters tall—not exactly fat, not exactly thin—just very solid, the kind of guy who looked like he could kill someone with one punch.

But even so, when they bumped into each other, it was the guy who took a step back.

“Sorry,” Su Yun said quickly before hurrying away, thinking it was nothing.

The man paused for a second, then continued into the classroom.

“Tingting.” He didn’t care how many people were in the class or whether the teacher was present—he just shouted the girl’s name in a rough, booming voice.

Everyone in the class turned to look at him with confused expressions. He clearly wasn’t from their class.

Only Zhang Deyi recognized who he was.

Zhang Deyi had applied to join the student council as soon as the semester started, wanting to fully experience his youth.

And because of his enthusiastic and sincere speech, he’d been accepted. During one of the council’s events, he’d found out who the president was and what he looked like.

Shi Lezhi, Student Council President.

When Zhang Deyi heard his dormmates say that Chen Tingting had suddenly climbed to the top of the freshman “Goddess Ranking” yesterday, veins popped on his arms, but he quickly calmed down again.

……

The last class of the morning went by quickly. The teacher didn’t ask questions or assign any tasks—just lectured non-stop.

Su Yun didn’t know why, but she suddenly had the urge to seriously pay attention.

She gave it a try, and it worked. She didn’t zone out or feel sleepy for a single minute in both classes.

That was her talent: as long as she wanted to listen, she would never get distracted, and she wouldn’t feel tired either.

That’s also how Su Yun had topped her grade two years in a row in high school. Back then, she even thought she might be a miracle from an otherwise unknown school.

“…” After class, everyone slowly filed out. Su Yun stayed behind to review what she’d just learned.

She spent five minutes summarizing.

Her conclusion:

She understood absolutely nothing.

The code was made up of letters from a to z. She recognized the letters, but not when they were put together.

Well… maybe not nothing. After two classes, she felt she kind of understood but also kind of didn’t. Some people might call that “getting it.”

But Su Yun knew: if that’s your level of understanding, then you don’t really get it. If the question changes even slightly, you won’t know how to solve it.

Sigh. Learning is not easy at all.

In the now-empty classroom, Su Yun slowly stood up, packed her bag, and left.

She didn’t really feel like eating lunch.

Last night’s meal had been quite filling. Besides, other than blood, anything else she ate was just a waste of money and time.

If she got too hungry, she could always buy something to fill her stomach, but it’d be like drinking water. She’d just get hungry again soon.

Su Yun returned to the dorm. No one else was back yet.

(Qin Xue: Don’t forget to come this afternoon.)

(There’s something else today.)

As soon as she opened her phone, a new task popped up.

“Something else”?

Washing windows? Cleaning the toilet? Moving stuff?

She was good at all of it.

Su Yun didn’t think much of it. Seemed pretty simple.

(Me: Got it. As you command, Sister Xue.)

……

“Did you hear? That classroom we had calculus in yesterday is rumored to be haunted. Someone walking by last night said they heard a girl screaming.” The first one back was Liu Fei. He brought takeout from the cafeteria and looked shocked as he scrolled through a long chat thread.

When Su Yun heard him, she immediately sat up straight.

There were photos in the chat, taken from downstairs.

In the pictures, the second-floor calculus classroom’s windows had a faint red glow—it looked seriously creepy.

If it were just pictures, Liu Fei wouldn’t have believed it. Could’ve been Photoshopped. But there was also a video, and the girl’s scream was very clear.

“You were still asleep after class yesterday. Did you notice anything?” Liu Fei asked Su Yun with a mix of curiosity and fear. His legs were shaking, and he’d lost his appetite.

Their classroom was haunted. Haunted!

“I don’t know. You woke me up, and I left a little after that.” Su Yun forced herself to stay calm.

She didn’t expect the incident to blow up like this.

But the thing was—she really didn’t know. After biting someone, she had no memory. When she woke up, she was already at Qin Xue’s place.

If anyone found out…

She’d be dragged off to a lab... or worse.

Su Yun’s face stiffened.

“Oh.” Liu Fei nodded. He didn’t dare keep reading the chat. He turned back to scrolling through pretty girl videos, trying to calm down enough to finish his meal.
