Chapter 49

“Meng Ge, you’re the first girl who’s ever been willing to talk to me.”

Lu Zhaohui spoke with deep emotion, his hands pressing down gently on Meng Ge’s shoulders.

“I’ve always been insecure since I was young—timid, shy, introverted. Every time I tried to talk to a girl, my face would turn red and I’d get flustered. People said I had social anxiety. Some even questioned my orientation, saying I never dared talk to girls.”

“I hated the place I used to live. It was full of prejudice and discrimination. People were restless, cold, vain. Everything was measured by money. Even before getting to know a girl, they’d investigate your background first instead of getting to know who you really are.”

“But then I met you. You’re so beautiful, so kind, so understanding. You never asked about my past. You scold me when I mess up and praise me when I do well. You take care of me like an older sister.”

“I’m not very bright. I don’t know how to talk properly. I don’t understand the romantic things girls like, and I can’t read between the lines.”

“I don’t care if you’re a demon or not. I like you because you’re a girl who sees me with no prejudice. That’s enough.”

Meng Ge stared at Lu Zhaohui in stunned silence.

“You… you knew I was a monster from the start?” she asked in disbelief.

Lu Zhaohui nodded. “Yeah.”

“You’re not disgusted by me being a monster?” she continued.

“Not at all. No matter what you are,” he said, nodding again with conviction.

Meng Ge couldn’t say a word. She looked at him, and for some reason, she felt a warmth flowing into her heart—melting the ice that had wrapped around it, setting her chest ablaze, her cheeks heating up.

Lizards are cold-blooded animals, after all… but it felt like she was being warmed.

“Your mom’s sick, right? Use my yang energy to help her. I know how hard it’s been for you every time she has a relapse. The things you do—you must’ve made some tough decisions. From now on, if she gets sick again, just use my energy. I don’t want you putting yourself in danger anymore.”

Lu Zhaohui gently patted her head, his face full of doting affection.

“But… if I absorb your yang energy, your lifespan…”

“That’s why, from now on, Xiao Meng needs to help me ‘replenish’ often. I don’t want to get drained into a mummy by you.”

Meng Ge said in disbelief, “Wait, are you serious?”

“My yang energy is strong. Just take a little each time to help your mom. As long as you don’t suck me dry, it’s fine.”

“Uhh…”

“Listen to me, okay? From now on, you can only ‘harm’ me. No touching anyone else without my permission.”

“Okay… okay… You’re so good to me!”

Beneath the balcony, in the world of shadows, Li Ran nearly dropped his glasses.

What the hell?

“Damn, this kid’s a natural!”

Ever since Lu Zhaohui suddenly confessed to Meng Ge and asked her to be his girlfriend, the story had completely spun out of Li Ran’s control.

(Meng Ge)

(Class B: Spiritual Infection Type)

(Eerie Power: 180)

(Unintentionally caught a glimpse of the "Mirror of Truth," learned the world’s truth, and realized she’s a monster.)

(A very filial girl, willing to do anything to save her mother.)

That was the information Li Ran had previously seen about Meng Ge.

In truth, she wasn’t how she seemed. She carried pain that couldn’t be put into words. And recognizing she was a monster made her insecure and afraid. She had feelings for Lu Zhaohui and didn’t want to hurt him. But her mother needed saving. So she had no choice but to keep rejecting Lu Zhaohui’s invitations while continuing to lure scumbag men back home to heal her mother.

Li Ran never expected that Lu Zhaohui would cut off communication with him on his own and confess to Meng Ge from the heart.

He’d asked him before—Lu Zhaohui really did like Meng Ge. From the beginning of this simulation, he knew these weren’t normal people. But even knowing that, he still had the courage to admit his feelings.

Luckily, it ended well.

The atmosphere was just right—any idiot would know what comes next.

When he saw Lu Zhaohui lean down to kiss the girl he loved, Li Ran smiled, took off the X-ray glasses, and disappeared from Building 3.

Lu Zhaohui’s mission was essentially complete. Li Ran had helped along the way, but in the end, it was Lu Zhaohui who won the girl with his own effort.

True love returned with sincerity.

It was honestly enviable.

There weren’t many people in this world Li Ran admired.

Now there was one more.

Lu Zhaohui!

“Ugh… my head…”

In a cozy room, a girl wearing cartoon pajamas woke up clutching her throbbing head.

“Where… am I?”

“Why… can’t I remember anything?”

She looked around, dazed. Besides the pain in her head, she had no memories of this room at all.

Just then, footsteps echoed from outside the door.

Her expression changed, and she quickly dove back under the covers, pretending to be asleep.

The door opened slowly. A man with silent footsteps walked up to her bed.

He gently lifted the blanket, revealing a peaceful, sleeping face beneath it.

“Still not awake?” he muttered softly.

A thin silver needle appeared in his palm. He slowly moved it toward the girl’s eye.

Closer… and closer. His gaze locked onto her face.

The needle poked lightly against her eyelid, creating a tiny dent—only then did the man retract it.

“Looks like the memory suppressant was pretty strong this time.”

He muttered to himself and turned to leave.

Only after his footsteps faded into the distance did the girl dare to open her eyes.

“Memory suppressant?”

She stared wide-eyed, shocked.

The place looked like a home. That man had entered her room without hesitation—he should be family, right?

But… why would a family member drug her?

Confused, she tiptoed to the door and pressed her ear to it, listening carefully.

Once she confirmed it was quiet outside, she gently opened the door and stepped out.

A strange living room. Strange furniture. Everything felt unfamiliar.

She had no memory of this place. She didn’t even know who she was or why she was here.

“She won’t find out. Our plan is solid enough to fool anyone.”

From the kitchen, she suddenly heard a woman’s voice.

She crept closer. A woman wearing an apron and smoking a cigarette was cooking while talking on the phone.

“The drug should wear off soon.”

“Don’t worry, we’re professionals. Recreating that day’s scene is a piece of cake.”

“It’s already the fifth time. We keep getting so close. Did she really forget?”

“Alright, one more try. If she still can’t remember, we won’t waste any more time.”

Just then, the woman’s peripheral vision caught something in the living room.

She turned her head, frowning slightly—there was no one there.

“I’ll hang up for now.”

After ending the call, she walked into the living room and called out gently, “Yingzhi, are you awake?”
